A popular Korean skincare trend for hydrated skin. All you need is a toner, commitment and a little addiction to Korean skincare. Why is the 7 skin method effective, how to do it? Read on and have your questions answered, plus a few tips on how to avoid the most common mistakes.
You thought that the 10-step Korean skincare routine is too extensive? According to one of the latest K-beauty trends, you should apply your toner 7 times!
It’s called the 7 skin method and many people swear by it who follow the latest Korean beauty trends. The name can also be translated as 7 toner method because the Korean language has one word for skin and toner too. The result: you can get the same level of hydration as with the 10 step skincare routine. It’s easy, it’s straightforward and it has quick results.
How and why does the 7 skin method work?
What actually happens is you’re packing in the hydration and your skin absolutely absorbs it. Toners are considered as the first leave-on liquid hydrating products in the Korean skincare routine so applying a toner, which is mild although hydrating, will leave your skin plump and soft.
The 7 skin method is suitable for all skin types. It helps oily skin to hydrate without applying a thick moisturizer, for this skin type, choose a watery textured toner. People with dry skin can achieve layers of hydration when nothing else seems to help, they should look for a more viscous textured toner.
The key to plump and hydrated skin is to use a small amount of product that your skin can easily absorb and you can immediately repeat the application, ideally 7 times. This skincare trick wouldn’t work for example with a cream because it’s not light enough for your skin to absorb just in a few minutes.
The advantage of layering a toner seven times is that you can ditch the other steps of your skincare routine, you only have to finish with a moisturizer. No need for serums, masks or boosters.
How to do the 7 skin method?
Always start by cleansing your face. The 7 skin method should come after the double cleansing so you apply your toner to your clean face.
Add a few drops of toner to your hands and start patting your skin. You should almost push the product into your skin but be very gentle! Do not pull on or rub your skin, only tap softly. Don’t forget your neck either.
Next, you should repeat this step 6 more times. If you are new to this and you want to start small, you can absolutely do so and start by 3 or 5 layers and work your way up from there.
Important! You shouldn’t build the 7 skin method into your everyday skincare routine, don’t overdo it. This is rather a quick fix for dehydrated, dry skin and you should focus on drinking enough water (2 litres/day) or invest in an air humidifier to solve your problem in the long run.
Tips on how to avoid the most common mistakes of the 7 skin method
Choose a mild toner without alcohol and fragrances because these can irritate your skin. Try to also stay away from active ingredients and acids like Vitamin C, AHA, BHA, PHA because they can be harsh on your skin if applied multiple times.
Choose a product that is not too thick, the more runny, the better. The reason behind this is watery toners can be absorbed better while thick toners tend to sit on your skin and your face will feel oily and overwhelmed.
Take your time with the 7 skin method. You need to tap the product in your skin entirely before applying the following layer otherwise the product will flood around on your skin and not get absorbed to the skin layers.
Finish off with a good moisturizer. Don’t let all your hard work go to waste, you need to seal the moisture in your skin by applying a moisturizer.
